Comments

This is an annual or anthology printed by the students of Lowestoft Secondary School of student work, activities and awards as they attempted to maintain some semblance of normality during their WW2 evacuation from Lowestoft.

I'm struck by the cheerful, can-do tone of the book. They don't shy away from talking about the war and their efforts to gather money for various projects, but they don't winge, they don't complain and they don't ever mention being scared, lonely or missing their family and friends. We live in a world where laying bare your feelings -even if it makes others feel badly- is a virtue and wallowing in self-pity is considered healthy. These very young Lowestoftian's resiliant attitude during a traumatic time can be a lesson to us all.
