In front of the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club, on the Royal Plain, is a memorial to the 716 Lowestoft men who died during World War I. To put 716 men lost in perspective, there were about 40,000 citizens in Lowestoft at the time. The normal percentage of war eligable men (of the right age and health) would be about 5,000. So one in seven men in Lowestoft who fought in the Great War, never came back.

The obolisk style of the memorial was used through the United Kingdom and was influenced by Rudyard Kipling and the Imperial Wars Graves Commission.

The memorial is dedicated 'To the Glorious Memory of our Honoured Dead' and was unveiled by Admiral of the Fleet Lord Wester Wemyss on 11th August 1921.
