Caption: No Caption Pencil notation at the bottom of the etching says Waveney, Lowestoft, fine proof before the writing. I think this was removed from a book of views of Norfolk called "Picturesque views on and near the Eastern Coast of England comprising the romantic scenery of the Yare, the Waveney and the Bure rivers of Norfolk from pictures painted by James Stark. and engraved by G. Cooke, W. J. Cooke, E. Goodall, J. Burnet and other eminent engravers with historical and geological descriptions by J. W. Robberds, Esq." printed in 1834.

The view is from a sand bank very close to where the Children's Corner is today and looking across to Pakefield, where you can see the church in the distance. All you can see in Pakefield is the church, a few houses and a windmill. At this time the river didn't exist and Lake Lothing was landlocked. There was a solid shingle and sand bank at the area where we have today's bascule bridge and you could walk from Kirkley (a few houses and mostly farms) to Lowestoft, which was located along the top of the hill, on High Street.

In this picture, I think the tall perches are interesting. I've never need them in other drawings and it's obvious that they were used to watch the sea for fishing boats coming in, and possibly for ships running aground on the sand banks. There was a lively competition between the Pakefield, Kirkley and Lowestoft lifeboat clubs for lifeboats to go and rescue floundering boats because they were paid per rescue.
