Caption: The French Convent, Lowestoft

An online reader saw this card and commented to me "Regarding the photo of the French Convent, in 1903 Boston Lodge was purchased to be used as a convent by nuns who were compelled to leave France. They intended to run a school from there. There was an advert for the school in the Norwich Mercury of 24th December 1904. Private lessons in French and Embroidery were given by the French sisters. It was known as Boston Lodge Convent."

There is a Boston Lodge Recreation Centre in the Ormiston Denes area and a Boston road. The Boston Lodge Centre looks much too new to be this building, but of course in 100 years they could have moved. I'll keep looking to see if this building is still around.

I'll also try to find out WHY the Sisters left France and if so, why did they end up in Lowestoft. That could be an interesting story in itself.
