This is one of two photos that the Emery family acquired from plates owned by H. Jenkins. Jenkins had the old plates of several early Lowestoft photographers stored in the basement of his studio on Pier Terrace (next to the bridge, in Kirkley) but lost them during a flood. I don't know when this plate was printed, but it must have been important to someone in the Emery family to have two photos printed in a large, rather expensive format decades after the event. The other photo is here.

The photo is about a cold snap that caused freezing on Oulton Broad. It looks like there was party to enjoy sledding on the frozen water and a sheep roast. I don't see any women or girls in either photo, so it must have been a something that wasn't appropriate for women. The signs hanging on the men are a mystery to me.

Look at this photo and see if you think the man in the white toque (chef's hat) is the same one in this other photo. I think it is.
