This photograph is unusually small (8cm x 4cm) and is the only one like it in my collection. Since photographers of the time bought standardized photo backings that were pre-printed and pre-embossed, this must have been a trial that didn't work out for retail. It's a wallet-sized photograph for time when people didn't have wallets and didn't carry around photos in them. If you wanted a photo to cut up and put in a watchcase or locket, you'd buy one that wasn't mounted on heavy cardboard.
