SQUALLY WEATHER
The photograph shows two steam drifters of the herring fleet battling their way through a rough sea off Lowestoft towards the herring grounds. Steam drifters are usually about 90 feet in length, with a beam of 18 1/2 feet and a draught of about 10 feet. These vessels have two masts, on each of which a small sail can be seet, but the fore-mast can be lowered when the dirfter is steaming against a strong head-wind or is engaged in fishing.
