OLD AND NEW
This photograph shows in the foreground one of the few remaining sailing trawlers off Lowestoft Harbour, which are used for catching plaice and sole. In the background are tow of the more recent steam drifters employed in the the herring industry. Drifters carry sufficient nets which, when fastened together and suspended in the sea, make a wall a mile or more long and several yards deep, whilst the ets used by trawlers consist of an immense bag which may be 80 feet long.
