Caption: White Horse Street, Lowestoft

This is the corner of White Horse Street and Dove Street, and is unfortunately unrecognizable today. The area has been totally razed and replaced with roads that make no sense and 1960's urban renewal.

When this photo was taken, White Horse Street was surely a poor area the Edwardian tourist avoided, even as he enjoyed looked at the romantic poor and their hovels. Surely no one who live there would want a postcard of the area- or could even afford to send one. Look at the young men standing on the street and staring at the photographer. There is something a bit hostile in how they stare back and the person standing in the doorway wearing the apron is curious about what is going on.

But White Horse Lane had a romantic aura and this house on the corner, with its medieval overhang and steeply pitched roof, could very well have been 500 years old in 1900. If this area had been kept undisturbed, it would have been like the old Tomblands in Norwich and a tourist attraction today.
