I love this group of sailors! You can see in their body language and the stuffed doll mascot we have a bunch of close mates. This interracial group shows that during a war, it's your comrade's character that matters, not the colour of their skin. I would like to be able to tell you the name of their ship, but like other wartime sailors, the ship's name on their cap bands has been blackened so that spies in port couldn't easily identify which ships were in port by looking at sailors on shore leave.
This group was staying in St. Luke's Hospital, which was converted into a barracks during the war. St. Lukes was located on the Esplanade, between Kensington Gardens and Rectory Road.
