As long as I can, this site will remain open and free to all. It is not my intention to make any money from this site. My goal is to share my collection of images of Lowestoft and in doing so provide context for the images and teach a bit of the history of Lowestoft to the next generation.
I am constantly amazed at how little local history young people know. I firmly believe that if you know your own history you take ownership and pride in your town. I heard a narrator on a BBC show about the Baedecker Blitz in Norwich relate how she lived in Gorleston and learned about the Blitz by taking a school trip to London, but had no idea until 20 years later that there was any bombing in Great Yarmouth or Lowestoft. That is, I think, scandalous, and a wrong I hope this site will help right.
It is important that our children know their own heritage so that they understand their place in the world and how they can take ownership of their own town. If they don't know what has happened in the past, how can they be expected to guide Lowestoft to the future?
If I charge a fee, like geneology sites, then I'm defeating my purpose to provide information to the many researchers and geneologists who can't physically get to the local archives. Again, if I put up barriers with log-ins, usernames, "free first month", and fees, I'm defeating my purpose. Scholarship only works if it's shared and hoarding in my office or in a locked file in local archives does no one any good. History only exists if someone knows about it. The internet is perfect for sharing images and recorded history without damaging fragile artifacts.
This site is here for you to use for your personal, educational, non-commercial scholarship and enjoyment, but if you want to contribute, I would welcome any help.
Contributions can be in time, information, images, sponsorships, and monetary donations.
Time is contributed by gathering information and, if possible, typing it up and sending it to me in an email. If you have ANY information that you think would be of benefit to this site, please contact me on the email link at the bottom of every page or via the Disqus comments. I receive every comment you post. Everyone who helps will be acknowledged on the website.
If you have any personal images and ephemera that you want to share, please contact me. I purchase images and bits of paper and I'll be happy to give a look at yours. If you don't want to sell or donate old photographs, but just want your images posted and you keep them as family heirlooms, I'm more than happy to work with you.
If you wish to sponsor a page, it will cost £10 per page, per year, and again, just contact me. Your family, club, business or organisation can sponsor any page and you will have a small sponsorship notice at the top of the page. If you want, you can have a link to your own website. All sponsorships are subject to approval and only those individuals and organisations who meet "family friendly" standards will be approved.
