Working on the "Hosanna"

War

Albums

This is an album from a two boxes of glass negatives I bought online. They appear to be of one family from the 1930's and there are three themes that tie the photos together.

The first theme is "Holidays on the Broads" where we can see the family boating on the Norfolk Broads. It's in the early 1930's, high summer and they play on the boats, camp in a beach hut, and visit with friends, possibly at a wedding. There is a mum, dad and young boys, one handsome young man we can recognise later. The photos of the beach huts and the broads might be taken on different holidays.

The second theme is "Working on the "Hosanna". Is the dad the skipper? The boy is a young man and we see them on the boat and they're not visiting, but working. The boat is LT167, the "Hosanna" and if we look closely we can see both the name and the registration number in the photos. One of the photos was taken on Hamilton docks, looking west and we can see a very new Hamilton House in the background.

The last group is "War". This group is how I'm dating the photos because it appears that the young man we see in on the boat is now a shade older, and kitted out in Army gear. You can see him showing off in the back garden. Is he on his way off to war? We see another picture where he looks a bit older, a bit more at ease in the uniform, and he's with another soldier who looks even more rough. Is it a friend? An older brother?

I hope he came back.
