(xiv) Armament
Guns :
One 20mm. (.78 in.) forward. In well.
One 20 mm. aft.
Two M.G.s on bridge.
Hand grenades.
Rifles with bayonets.
Ammunition : 500 rounds of 20 mm.
Torpedo Tubes : Two, built-in, forward, one on either side.
Angling Gear : None. Torpedos always fired without angling.
Torpedoes:
Two G.7a carried in tubes on minelaying sorties.
Two G.7a carried in tubes and two spare abaft tubes on torpedo sorties.
D/C.s : Six W.B.B. type D/C's carried on torpedo sorties; none on minelaying sorties.
Flame-thrower : None.
Mines : L.M.B. Six carried. Each was attached by two black rubber bands to a light trolley running on rails placed on either side of the boat. To lay, the bands holding the mine to the trolley had first to be slipped and mine and trolley then pushed overboard together. (If possible the trolley is retained.) . All mines were magneto-acoustic.
N.I.D. Note- L.M.B. mines weigh 1,000 kg., have a diameter of 26 in. and a length of about 7 ft. They are often laid from aircraft by parachute.
(xv) Compressors
Four. Capacity 12 m3 (424 cu. ft.) of air per hour compressed to 200 kg. per sq. cm. (2,845 lbs per sq. in.)
(xvi) Air Bottles
Two for torpedoes. Two for engine starting.
(xvii) Battery
Nickel- steel. 24 cells.
(xviii) Wiping
"S 71" was wiped in Kiel in February, 1942, and in Rotterdam in September, 1942.
(xix) Scuttling Charges
Two in forward engine room, one on either side. (See also C. B. 4051(43), page 11.)
(xx) Rudder
One. No auxiliary steering.
(xxi) Guide Vanes
Two, one to each propeller. (See also C. B. 4051(41), page 16.)
(xxii) Smoke Canisters and Floats
Two canisters aft, one on either side. Operated by H.P. air from torpedo air bottles.
Two smoke floats aft. Improved type emitting dense smoke and flames to emulate burning vessel.
(xxiii) Minesweeping
Prisoners agreed that it would be possible for "S 71" to sweep, but added she had never done so. No minesweeping gear was carried.
(xxiv) Searchlight
On mast.
(xxv) Steam Heating
Steam heating supplied from shore when in shelter.
(xxvi) German Search Reciever
None.
