Feby 24th- Just before 2 o’clock to-day Robert Howes, when approaching the school gate, was knocked off his bicycle by a youth cycling to work down the Herring Fishery Score (see entry of Feby. 3rd).

Feby. 28th- Last night Miss Violet May, an Examiner and Instructor of the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade & an old girl of the Central School, gave an address on A.R.P. Work to the Old Scholars’ Association.

March 7th- Miss Lowman, Assistant Mistress, is absent today, having been called to London owing to the serious illness of her father.

March 8th- Miss Lowman returned to duty.

March 9th- A new Projector- Siemans, 16mm. Silent, no H73686 has been provided for the School by the Education Authority, and it was first used last night from 7 to 8.30 when some interesting films were shown to 120 of the scholars.

March 13th- The girls won their hockey match against Yarmouth Central School on Saturday 3-0

March 14th- A Kodak Film on the Argentine was used in geography lesson to-day.

March 17th- The Headmaster was absent through illness on Wednesday (15th) & Thursday afternoon.

March 20th- The girls drew their netball match (15-15) against Norwich High School on Saturday.

March 22nd- Last Wednesday and to-day parties of the senior boys visited the Gasworks by kind invitation of the Manager.

March 23rd- No games at the Field which was being prepared for the Tournament on Saturday. 6 films (from Robinson) were shown in the School Hall to-day.

March 27th- The Games Tournament arranged by the Physical Training Organisers for Saturday last was cancelled on account of the very bad weather.

March 31st- The scholars brought 125 eggs for the Hospital to-day.

April 3rd- The postponed Games Tournament was held on Saturday. Most of the Secondary Central & Senior Schools of the town & district were represented. Our girls played in the hockey and netball sections.

The boys football team was at Norwich playing Norwich Technical School. We lost.

April 4th- 5 Empire G.P.O films were shown to the boys & girls to-day. A new typewriter- Imperial T4338- was received to-day in exchange for the old one which had been in use 3 years.

April 5th- 3 films (Robinson) were shown this afternoon before closing for the Easter Holiday. All pupils took home their School reports.

April 17th- School re-opened. All Staff present.

April 24th- Cornelia Hampson who application was submitted to the School Managers was admitted to-day from Ryde Senior school.

May 1st- The Minor Scholarships Examination was held at the School to-day. 165 girls were present. All the members of the staff were present for supervision duty, except Mr. Bushell, who was absent owing to the serious illness of his mother. The Headmaster attended a meeting of the National Savings Advisory Committee at Cambridge on Friday.

May 3rd- Mr. Bushell again absent. His mother died this morning.

May 4th- Mr. Bushell returned to duty. The Rector of Lowestoft (Canon Whytehead) visited the School this afternoon.

May 8th- Mr. Bushell is absent attending the funeral of his mother. The staff were represented at the funeral by Mr. Gooch & Mr Wilkin.

May 17th- Miss Craig, Cooking Mistress, is absent ill.

May 18th- Medical Certificate received from Miss Craig. She is suffering from the German Measles. Ascension Day. 21 boys & girls attended Church Service this morning. They returned to school and marked present.

May 22nd- The boys’ cricket match v Norwich Technical School at Norwich on Saturday was drawn.

May 23rd- G.P.O Films on Canada were shown in Geography lessons to-day. By permission Mr. Moore, Science Master, was absent on May 18th & 19th attending his nephew’s wedding in Lancashire. A member of junior boys & girls went to the Crown Meadow this afternoon for a rehearsal of the Physical Training Display to be given at the Schools Sports.

May 24th- Empire Day. This morning the senior boys & girls attended the service at Sparrow’s Nest. The Juniors had a short service in the Hall. School Closed this afternoon.

May 31st- School Closed on Monday & Tuesday, 29th & 30th for Whitsuntide Holiday. The Headmaster, by permission of the Committee, attended the National Savings Assembly at Blackpool on May 25th, & 26th.

Miss Craig returned to duty on May 25th after 6 days’ absence.

Miss Badham reports that Mr. Pemberton, H.M. Inspector of Schools, visited the School on Friday morning.

June 1st- School Closed for the Schools Sports and P.T. Display in the Crown Meadow this afternoon.

June 6th- 3 boys- Mummery, Grove, & Farmer- are taking the R. A. F. Entrance Examination at the Technical School to-day. They are marked E [note-with a circle around the “e”] in the School Register.

June 12th- The boys lost their cricket match against Norwich Technical School on Saturday.

June 15th- Wm Pinkney (14) was damaged in a cycle collision when on the way to School this morning. Miss Craig attended to his injuries immediately and he was seen at the Clinic by Dr. Walker, who thought it advisable to have an X-ray photograph of the boy’s hand. He was taken to to the Hospital by Mr. Gooch and the photograph showed a fracture of a small bone. After the necessary treatment he was taken home in a taxi (Watson) by Mr. Gooch.

June 19th- by permission of the Committee Miss Lowman, Assistant Mistress, will be absent 4 days this week taking an Examination in London.

June 22nd- Last night in the School Hall, Mr. Wyatt, the Secretary of the Norwich Model Engineering Society, gave a lecture to about 50 of the senior boys. He showed a number of excellent models made by by himself & other members of the Society.

June 23rd- Miss Lowman returned to duty.

June 26th- At 8:30 am 11 boys and 16 girls accompanied by Miss Needham, Mr. Gooch & Mr Bushell started their School Journey to Cheltenham by coach (Watson). An excellent booklet has been prepared by

Monday- Journey to Cheltenham via Bury St. Edmonds and Bedford.

Tuesday- Tour of the Cotswolds by coach and on foot.

Wednesday- Coach to Birmingham. Morning at the Austin Motor Works. Lunch in the Licking Hills. Afternoon at Cadbury’s, Bourneville.

Thursday- Coach to Worcester. Visit Royal Porcelain Works & the Cathedral. Return via Malvern, Ledbury & Tewkesbury.

Friday- Coach to Stroud returning via Painswick. Birdlip & Seven Springs along the crest of the Cotswolds.

Saturday- Visit to Stratford- on - Avon. Attend performance of Richard III in the Memorial Theatre.

Return via Broadway & Evesham

Sunday- Tour of the Wye Valley by coach, Ross, Momouth, Symmonds Yat., Tintern Abbey, Chepstow & Forest of Devon, Gloncestor.

Monday- Return from Cheltenham by coach.

July 3rd- The members of the School Journey party returned to School this morning and Mr. Bushell reported that the whole of the arranged programme had been successfully carried out. By instructions from the Office all the scholars on the School Journey have been marked absent for the 8 days.

July 6th- Too wet for games at the field. 22 girls and 9 boys are absent at the School treats this afternoon. By permission, Miss Presley is also absent this afternoon assisting at a Sunday School treat.

July 10th- The Term Examinations will be held this week. The normal Time-Table will be suspended.

July 13th- 26 girls and 21 boys are absent at Sunday School treats this afternoon.

July 14th- 35 boys and 34 girls taken in order of merit from the Scholarship List, have been offered places in the School for September.

July 20th- School closed this (Thursday) afternoon for the School’s Swimming Sports which had to be postponed owing to heavy rain.

July 21st- The swimming competitors were allowed to go to the Swimming Pool this afternoon for the events postponed yesterday.

July 24th- The 3 boys who took the Royal Air Force Examination in June were all successful- Crowe, Mummery, and Farmer.

Boys & girls attended the Swimming Pool for tests this morning.

July 25th- The Annual School Sports were held on the Corton Road Field yesterday afternoon. Before the programme of events could be finished heavy rain caused the abandonment at 4 o’clock.

July 26th- The Sports events were completed this morning. A number of interesting instructional films (Empire & G.P.O.) are being shown in the School Hall to-day.

July 27th- School closed for the Summer Holiday at 4.30.

All scholars took home their School reports. Mr. J. Snowling (Hand.t. Dept.) finished duty today.

From Friday, September 1st to Tuesday Sept. 5th, the School was occupied by some 300 evacuated persons from Dagenham. [note- east London]

They consisted of the boys and girls from a R.C. School in charge of 4 nuns. The boys and girls of a Junior School in charge of a Headmaster and 5 Teachers and about 30 mothers with infant children. Sleeping accommodation was provided in the classrooms and the meals were prepared by the School Staff in the Cookery Kitchen. The members of the School staff attended during the 5 days and took turns with day and night duty. On Sept 5th the evacuees were transported to billets in Beccles.

War with Germany was declared on Sunday, September 3rd.

During the period of Sept. 6th-24th the School was thoroughly cleaned and prepared for normal School use. The building had been painted outside and the girl’s playground.

Sept. 25th- School reopened. All members of staff present. 30 boys and 29 girls from the Scholarship List admitted. Classes arranged as usual and the normal Time-table in use. Instructions have been received to open School at 1:30 in the afternoon. Milk will be distributed as usual this term.

Sept. 26th- The School nurse examined boys & girls this afternoon.

Sept. 27th- Mr. J. Youngman, an old by of the School who has been with a business firm in Shanghai during the past 6 years visited the School.

A.R.P. Drill [note- Air Raid Practice Drill] was taken to-day. All scholars were in their places within 2 minutes.

Sept. 28th- The boys went to the Field for football to-day.

Sept. 29th- 13 boys and 10 girls have left School for employment, 2 boys and 8 girls have left the town temporarily. This gives 261 on the school registers and the attendance this week was 96.7%.

Oct. 2nd - The School Hall is being converted into and air raid shelter and is not now available for assembly, singing, or physical training.

Oct. 4th- Mr. A.Pitt, H.M. Asst. Inspector for Schools, visited the School this morning mainly to see the progress of the air raid shelter.

Oct. 6th- The Asst. School Medical Officer & the School Nurse examined some special cases to-day.

Oct. 12th- Gams [sic] a the Field yesterday & to-day.

Oct. 16th- Miss Craig, Domestic Subjects Mistress commenced a course of lessons in Cookery for 12 ship’s cooks to-day in the Cookery Kitchen. The girl’s cookery lessons will be suspended during the period of the lessons, probably 2 weeks.

Oct. 18th- A.R.P. Practice in School to-day. Dennis Pope, who left School on Dec. 21st, 1938 has returned to School to prepare for the RAF Examination in December.

Oct. 25th- Miss Barton & Mr. Pemberton, H.M. Inspector of Schools, visited the School this afternoon.

Oct. 30th- Betty Parkhill (13) from Hull Central School was admitted here to-day.

Miss Craig has commenced a course of lessons with another class of ship’s cooks.

Nov. 6th- Charles Jagger (14) was admitted from Woolwich Junior Technical School.

Nov. 10th- Miss Craig finished the lessons with the ship’s cooks of H.M. Navy to-day. During the past month she has trained 24 men. She will resume the girl’s normal cookery lesson on Monday.

Nov. 13th- Manager’s Meeting.

Nov. 20th- From to-day the afternoon session will be from 1.30 to 3.40 pm.

Nov. 22nd- The girls went to the Games Field to-day.

Nov. 23rd- Weather too bad for the boy’s games. A geographical film (“The Port of London”) was shown to the senior boys and girls this afternoon.

Arrangements have been made for the School Nurse to visit the School every Tuesday afternoon.

Dec. 5th- Further application has been made by the Principal of the Technical Institute for the services of Miss Craig, Cookery Mistress, to finish a Naval Cookery Class started by a mistress who is now absent ill. The Secretary has agreed that Miss Craig shall take the class the remainder of this week.

Dec. 13th- Mr. Basil Crowe, an old boy of the School, commenced duty as a junior handicraft instructor this afternoon. He will attend part-time this week & commence full duty next week.

Dec. 18th- The School Hall was not available for the usual Christmas Parties. The Vicar of Christ Church kindly allowed us to use the Parish Hall. Nearly all the scholars remained at the School for lunch which was provided by the parents and shared.

After lunch the whole School had Christmas Games in the Parish Hall, dismissing at 3.30.

Dec. 20th- The Headmaster was attending a Scholarship Committee Meeting at the County Hall, Ipswich, yesterday.

A Christmas Carol Service was held in the School this morning.

School closed for the Christmas Holidays this afternoon.

All scholars took home their School Reports.
