A WOMAN ON SUFFRAGETTES.

Suffragettes have been very busy in Lowestoft of late. After leaving the place severely alone, it was evidently discovered that there was a good field for propaganda work, and so sundry and divers of the ladies who seek votes for women have been holding forth at street corners with the object of inducing their Lowestoft sisters to join them. A few youths have put rather inane questions, but on the whole the meetings have been orderly, and the speeches interesting if not illuminating. But while the methods in Lowestoft have been peaceful and quiet, it is not to be forgotten what has taken place in other parts where politicians opposed to the women's suffrage movement have been subjected to annoyance and insult, and even to assault. A mere man could express himself very strongly on these tactics, but, then, be would be looked upon as biassed, and his opinion would be discounted accordingly. A woman's view on the operations of the militant females who light for rotes cannot, however, fail to be interesting, and seeing the activity of the suffragists in Lowestoft, we will just repeat what Lady Violet Greville has remarked. In a recent article she opens with the following scathing observations-

"Woman's inconsistency was never more evidenced than in the behaviour of the riotous suffragettes. First of ell, they, clamour for a share in the government of the' nation, then they proceed to show their fitness for it by breaking the law, screaming, shouting, slapping unoffending policemen who do their duty. knocking off their helmets and kicking them in the ribs. When they are committed to prison, they rebel against prison rule, demand greater indulgences. refuse to submit to discipline, kick and hit the wardresses. who are women also. break windows, starve themselves, and, in fac, behave like the rowdiest arab of the streets."

Having thus castigated, Lady Violet proceeds to rub in brine thusly :

"What must be the feelings of the man who knows that his wife or his mother has been brawling in the street. rolling in the gutter, jeered at by the crowd. struggling end kicking in the arms of a person who. though a police official, is also a man. taken of in disgrace to a prison, where they kick other women? What' an example! Bow can be respect or admire them for such unwomanly and immodest actions? The saddest part of the whole matter is the bitterness aroused between men and women, the exasperation created, the sex war that is being declared. Men and women may be equal, but they were never intended to be enemies. The silly and suicidal behaviour of girls who rail at marriage, preach emancipation from all restraints, and declare their hatred for men, while ignorant of the supreme I beauty and fruition of a true woman's life, does infinite harm to the sex, a harm that will continue long after their puny efforts hare ceased. What is to become of the family when mother is arrayed against sons. wife against husband. sister against brother? The asperity of ill-feeling created in home circles will be far-reaching in its effects."

We should very much like to know, what the ladies who have spent their holiday in Lowestoft in addressing meetings in the open air think of Lady Violet Greville's whip-lashing.
