George Croughton took over J. S. Cornaby's studio in Lowestoft about 1875. You can see some of Cornaby's imprints still on the backs of Croughton's photographs with an overprint of "Late of". Yes, when I first read "late" I thought poor Mr. Cornaby had died, but that's not what "late" meant back in 1875. Croughton just meant to say "used to be".
The location on the photos was listed as 19 Albert Place Near Marine Parade. In Kelly's Suffolk Directory 1875/1879 and in White's Suffolk Directory, 1885 he is listed as working from 19 London Road, South, Lowestoft. According to the back of his cards he medaled in photography in 1872 and again in 1874 at competitive exhibitions.
An H. Croughton, London Road South, Lowestoft is listed in Harrod's Norfolk Directory, 1877, but I think this might be a typo.
I can't find any post cards or journalistic work from Croughton. His entire oeuvre seems to be studio portraits.
