A. Crisp and Son were stationers and booksellers who also took photographs to supplement their business. I don't have any record if the photos were taken by Mr. Crisp or the "& Son". The photos were all of local interest and the main subject was the fishing industry and a few local tourist spots. Someone in the family did go out right after the Bombardment of Lowestoft on April 25th, 1916 and take pictures of bomb damage, which were then made into post cards and also sold to London newspapers and magazines.
The quality of the photographs is good, but not great. Some are heavily retouched and this takes away from the photos (see L0027 and L0053).
Crisp, A. & Son were located at 22 High St., Lowestoft from at least 1882 to the 1920's. The business as listed in the G. S. Cook's Suffolk Directory, 1882 as "Booksellers and Stationers 22 High Str, Lowestoft". Some of their postcards have 22 & 176 High St. as the address.
This photo, dated 1882, might be of the Crisps. The father is certainly doting, from the inscription on the back.
