Lowestoft Fishing Vessels converted to HM mine-sweeping craft as part of the evacuation of BEF and French forces from Dunkirk May 27th to June 4th 1940.
Name- Formidable (aka Fidget)...Vernon’s Private Navy was a flotilla of five wooden drifters rescuing ground mines by trawling attached to HMS Vernon. The drifters were Lord Cavan LT68, Silver Dawn LT 194, Fisher Boy LT334, Jacketa LT296 & Formidable (Fidget) LT100 rescued 4000+ Soldiers between them. Lord Cavan’s Temp. Skipper J.H. Muggridge R.N.R. Awarded D.S.C. - Vessel sunk by gunfire 2nd June 1940 - all crew rescued.
The Drifters made several cross-channel trips to Ramsgate averaging 200 soldiers each - largest number 312 in one crossing by Silver Dawn.
